Gundam diehards tend to favor the Universal Century(U.C.) series; U.C. is the timeline in which the original Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 takes place. Series such as the popular Zeta Gundam to the controversial, yet also popular, Turn-A Gundam are in that continuity.
For years there were rumors that a new U.C. series was being worked on. We’ve seen Alternate Century series such as the recent Gundam 00 meet with success but the U.C. fans still wanted more, and this coming Spring, they will definitely get it. Bandai is planning a simultaneous overseas release of Gundam Unicorn, a 6 episode Original Video Animation(OVA). Think high quality movie series, as in more budget than a TV series but not in one sitting like a movie(though don’t be surprised if Gundam Unicorn eventually is condensed into a movie with new footage).
The series features the Unicorn Gundam, designed by famed mecha designer Hajime Katoki. Yes the same guy that designed the beast Sentinel Gundam, the Gundams from Endless Waltz, and has a few series of Gundam toylines based on his designs, in addition to a book. The look of the Unicorn Gundam in Unicorn Mode is rather unique, whereas the appropriately named Destroy Mode features a more traditional appearance.
