PlayOn Comes To Wii

The PlayOn media server, which allows access to videos from Hulu and Netflix, now supports the Nintendo Wii. Read on to find out why I recommend trying this thing out.

The Media Mall has announced that their PlayOn media server technology is now compatible with the Nintendo Wii. For those that don’t know what PlayOn is, let me give a crash course. PlayOn allows you to use your Xbox360, PlayStation3, and now your Wii to watch videos from sites like Hulu, Netflix (if you have a Netflix account), CBS, CNN, ESPN, Amazon VOD and YouTube. The videos play full screen, and you can control the quality. But the biggest feature for PlayOn, is the ability to add custom, fully functional, plug-ins. I use these plug-ins to access GameTrailers.com, Food Network, Crackle, Adult Swim, SpikeTV and a bunch of others. The software cost $39.99, but has a 14-day free trial. Why not give it a shot.

I have been using PlayOn for the better part of a year now with my PlayStation3. It is one of the simplest things to set up, and has been well worth the money I paid (only $30 since I beta tested it for 6 months). If you like Hulu or Netflix, but despise using your computer to watch stuff from there, this is the program for you. Stick it to Microsoft so you don’t have to have a Gold Live Membership to watch Netflix. Stick it to Hulu, who blocked the PlayStation3 and Wii browsers from watching their content. I said screw the guys trying to limit my access to cool shit via my TV.

I liked the free trial I used a while back, but I can’t bring myself to spend the $39.99 on the program.

I love this. I use it all the time on my PS3. I got it free by buying some shoes from some online site. Some weird promotion they were running a while back. I’m really impressed with the quality of both Netflix and Hulu streaming.

The use of this program had me thinking of buying a PS3 slim to go in my bedroom so I can stream PlayOn content to it as well as use the blu-ray. I do have a wii but it’s connected to the same TV as the PS3 so I probably won’t do much PlayOn via wii aside from just testing it out.

I saw there were a few new plug-ins released. Sweet. Now I have BBC, Cartoon Network, Local File Browsing and SyFy.

I tinkered with this one the wii and it barely worked. When it did work it didn’t look near as good as on the PS3. There was an update to PlayOn over the past few days though so I will probably try it again over the weekend and see how it looks now.
